National Perioperative Quality Improvement Network (NaPQIN) is a quality improvement initiative aimed at improving surgical and anesthesia care, with a long-term impact on implementing SaLTS to improve care along the perioperative pathway through data collection, analysis, and dissemination of best practices.
Ethiopia has been committed to ensuring that essential and emergency surgical care is accessible and affordable to its citizens. During the first Health Sector Plan, the Ministry of Health has developed and implemented two strategies- the National Healthcare Quality Strategy (NQS) and Saving Lives Through Save Surgery Strategy (SaLTS) – that mainly aimed to improve the quality and safety of surgical care. In addition, the SaLTS initiative was launched in response to the World Health Assembly resolution-68/15 and envisioned making accessible and affordable essential and emergency surgical and anesthesia care part of the universal health coverage.
Objectives
Establish a national perioperative database: Establish a comprehensive perioperative registry to collect, analyze, and visualize data, and avail it for decision-making and quality improvement initiatives at the facility level and a national level.
Foster Collaborative Improvement: Encourage evidence-based multidisciplinary teamwork and communication among perioperative care providers to drive continuous quality improvements in perioperative care.
The NaPQIN work method employs varied approaches for data collection at a facility level, real-time analysis, and data visualization through a federated data storage and management system. This setup allows participating units to maintain ownership of their data while facilitating metadata interoperability for sites opting to join regional and national collaborations to improve perioperative care programs.
This platform further allows for the seamless sharing of best practices and benchmarking across different facilities and enables collaboration ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes and standardized care protocols.
